In the Beginning...
Ste ‘Angus’ Byatt and me played in a rock band together years ago. We wrote our own stuff, toured all over, rehearsed till our fingers bled, were double booked and gazumped by Def Leppard, cos they arrived at the gig before us ( I still remeber their lights made out of catering sized bean tins!!) We had a great local following,(thanks YMCA Haresfinch and the Theatre Royal) but got nowhere!!
Our ACE/DC drummer Ste ‘Ruddy’ Doyle was an old fan of the band and used to watch us as a spotty youth at the old YMCA in St. Helens. He longedto play with his boyhood idols, but got stuck with us instead!
You see this band is like family, we all have this intrinsic connection and Rock Family Trees would have a field day!! One day we came together from our disparate corners and from the start I knew it was right.
The decision to form a tribute to AC/DC was an easy one. We had an affinity with the honest, no nonsense attitude of the band, loved to rock , what you see is what you get, and that drive just can’t be beat!!
The tongue in cheek style was always something I admired and I have shared that ‘If it ain’t fun don’t do it’ attitude to music all my life.
I have been in blues bands, rock bands, been a 60’s Mindbender on the same bill Lionel Blair and Hinge and Brackett (cringe!), and a 70’s Glam Rocker, but I always knew I would end up back playing with my musical soulmate Steve ‘Angus’ B. There is something intuative and effortless when we strike up and Ste ‘Ruddy’ D on drums justs sits in the pocket!
When vocalist Mike Mc. left to pursue a more lucrative cabaret career, we were a bit stuck. To the rescue came the incredible talents of my old mate Chuff Twanger, singer and band leader of my 70’s alter ego band ‘The Hollywood Flairz’. Chuff slotted in really well and belted out the tunes as if he’d been singing them for years.
One of my favourite 70’s bands was ‘HOME’ with Cliff Williams on bass and Laurie Wiesfield (Wishbone Ash/ Queen Musical guy) on guitar. I played their ‘Alchemist’ Album to death . What an honour it is to be pumping out Cliff’s basslines every night with a bunch of mates who just happen to be some of the best musos around!
AC/DC have always been a favourite band, great to watch .......... ahh the memoies of Liverpool Empire!!!! Keep on rockin’ Keep it live, and play it LOUD!
For those about to rock....... WE SALUTE YOU!! ( nice one Brian!!)
